The workplace still felt weird, but Kim was glad the load kept her focused and too busy to worry about covert glances, whispers, and fake smiles. Earlier in the day she’d met with her new client, a start-up investment company. They’d loved her branding ideas, from the simple image of the dollar sign shaped like an anchor to the slogan she’d created: “Your Money: Secure. Protected. Multiplied.” Tanya was thrilled that her client was happy. When Kim looked good, she did, too. But the president, Scott Martin, had barely spoken a word to her since the article on Grey had come out more than a week ago. At another time in her life Kim would have been worried, would have bent over backwards to try and impress her superior. But life had rearranged her priorities.
Her major meeting over and Tanya gone for the day, Kim responded to several emails, sent off a memo to the graphic designer doing her client’s artwork, and placed a folder of filing into her assistant’s inbox. Then she turned off the light, shut her office door, and headed home. It felt good to take off a little early, especially now as fall approached, her favorite time of the year.
Kim reached her car, opened the glove compartment, and pulled out the burner phone. She was relieved to see a message from Jayda. Kim shot back a quick response, glad that her time with Nicky had gone well and reminding her of the upcoming WHIP meeting the second Saturday, as always. She pulled out of the parking lot thinking of Harley and Jayda, how different they all were, yet how invaluable both now were in her life. Remembering their fun time last night made her smile, especially hearing how both had met the men they loved. Could she and Aaron ever get back to the love they shared in the beginning? Kim thought counseling would help, but she’d recently broached the subject a second time. Aaron’s answer had been the same. No. Kim made a mental note to call her mom and get the name of the church’s marriage counselor. Their marriage needed some kind of intervention. If Aaron wouldn’t go see a therapist with her, Kim would go alone.
She turned onto their street as her phone rang. Aaron’s name flashed on the dash. She tapped the icon on her steering wheel. “I was just thinking about you.”
“Oh.”
“You said that as though headed for time out. They weren’t bad thoughts.”
“These days I can’t tell.” A sober comment, but she heard the smile in his voice. “What time are you getting off work today?”
“I’m off now and pulling into the drive. Why?”
“The neighbors invited us out to dinner.”
“Connie and Phil?”
“Yep.”
“Wow, that’s interesting. A special occasion?”
“If so, Phil didn’t mention it. He was outside when I pulled up, said he and Connie were going out for dinner and asked if we wanted to join them. Said it had been a while since we’d all gotten together.”
“He’s right about that.”
Their sons were best buds and classmates.
